Our second major offering for the 9x transmitter!  Like our SmartieParts 9X Programmer board, the goal here is to reduce or eliminate the need for soldering when modifying your 9x transmitter.  TelemetrEZ (Telemetry + Easy) achieves that for the popular, but otherwise difficult, task of adding FrSky Telemetry capabilities to your system.

Normally, when performing Telemetry mods, quite tricky soldering is involved because the 9x has no available inputs.  There's a number of Do It Yourself (D.I.Y.) guides published here, authored by the ingenious folks that figured this stuff out... but as you'll see, the tasks can be daunting even for those experienced with soldering and electronics.  In particular is the step where you are required to solder two wires directly to the tiny pins on the 9x's main chip... yikes!  TelemetrEZ solves all that with little or no soldering required (see Note 1 below). 

TelemetrEZ bolts onto the back circuit board on the inside of your 9x.  Three included jumper wires connect the TelemetrEZ to your 9x.  Another included wire connects to your FrSky telemetry enabled transmitter module (see Note 2 below).  The onboard Atmel Attiny1634 chip makes the magic happen!  It accepts the signals from the FrSky and passes them along to the 9x via UART.

Now... this can really open up some doors for other modifications as well!  While TelemetrEZ is sold specifically for the purpose of adding FrSky Telemetry to your 9x, the possibilities are almost endless.  What we've done is open a direct line of communication with the 9x, which has no available inputs, but guess what?!?!  TelemetrEZ has plenty of inputs ready to be put to work!  With community support (see Notes 3 and 4 below) all sorts of add-on devices could be interfaced with TelemetrEZ, and TelemetrEZ would handle the job of passing data back and forth with the 9x.  From rotary encoder projects, to sound projects, to fancy buddy box mods... there's so much that can be done!  For this reason, we've decided to have the TelemetrEZ firmware completely open source.  I imagine many of you will be buying this with no intention of using it for Telemetry at all... get creative and have fun!

If it isn't obvious, you will need to flash custom firmware to your 9x to take advantage of TelemetrEZ (see Note 5 below).  Of course, you'd have to do that anyway if you want to incorporate telemetry into your system whether your make your life easier with TelemetrEZ or not.  I would suggest our SmartieParts programmer is the perfect companion for that purpose, but it is not required.

Notes

  1. The soldering that is required depends on whether or not you have our SmartieParts programmer board, and which version.
    • With the SmartieParts board Revision 2.3 or newer, there is zero soldering required!  TelemetrEZ comes with a wire to plug directly into Rev 2.3+ boards.
    • With the SmartieParts board Revision 2.2 or older, you'll need to solder two wires directly to the SmartieParts "MISO" and "MOSI" pads.  Its a relatively easy job, and there's no risk to our 9x since you don't have to solder to it.
    • Even if you don't have a SmartieParts board at all, TelemetrEZ still makes your life a lot easier with only two wires to solder to your 9x, and they aren't the hard ones!  Still, if you aren't comfortable with soldering, we recommend you get a SmartieParts board to make the install that much simpler.
  2. TelemetrEZ was designed with FrSky's DJT module in mind specifically.  The DJT version plugs directly into your 9x's module bay and has a jack which our included wire plugs directly into.  If you have the DHT (D.I.Y.) version then you'll have to cut off the plug and make the "tx" and "rx" connections yourself, but then that's expected with D.I.Y.  If you bought the DFT version, then you bought the wrong product for the 9x (it doesn't physically fit) but I know some people have done that and "strapped" the module to their 9x.  In that case, I believe TelemetrEZ would connect the same way as the DJT but you may have to extend the wires a little depending on how/where you've strapped the module.
  3. "Out of the box", TelemetrEZ has appropriate firmware to work as described (ie. Telemetry functions), provided your 9x has supporting fimrware installed on it (see #5 below).  Other functions will require you or someone else in the modding community to customize the TelemetrEZ's firmware appropriately, AND the 9x's firmware if you want it to actually do anything!  SmartieParts won't be playing a role in the development of the firmware.  We give you the tools... now go off and play!
  4. For the purposes of updating the firmware on TelemetrEZ, we put a standard 10-pin ISP header onboard.  Any suitable AVR programmer should work for this purpose, such as the popular and inexpensive usbasp.  Starting with Rev 2.4, the SmartieParts programmer is a perfect companion as it now comes with a port specifically designed to update TelemetrEZ without having to open the case!
  5. 9x firmware must support TelemetrEZ for it to work!  The latest ER9X-FRSKY firmware supports TelemetrEZ.  Other firmware packages (Open9x, TH9X, etc) may not adopt the system until there are sufficient requests from the user base.  As with all things related to 9x firmware, I point you over to openrcforums.comSmartieParts supports its own hardware but we can't support firmware or software as it is community developed and really has nothing to do with us at all.  Please directly your firmware queries to the forums.
